Facebook Beacons have been around for a while now – well over a year. Rumor has it, some businesses have requested them and actually received them – but that was long long ago. Many businesses are submitting their requests for the Beacons with the hopes of using them to unlock Facebook Place Tips when clients visit their Brick & Mortar businesses.
Just yesterday, Social Media Today published an article on Growing Your Audience for Free using Facebook Beacons. What they fail to mention is if Facebook has decided to actually fulfill any of these requests. While I hope that Facebook will start distributing the Beacons, I have a suspicion these Beacons are about as easy to get as a blue checkmark verified page (nearly impossible, if you didn’t know!). There have been businesses waiting for years for a Beacon. So, instead of crossing your fingers and hoping, let me show you how to access Facebook Place Tips without using the Facebook Beacon. All you need is WiFi at your Brick and Mortar location!
What are Facebook Place Tips?
When people visit your business and open Facebook, they’ll see a prompt to access Place Tips at the top of their newsfeed.
Clicking on that link will open up a full-screen experience with information about your business like:
- A welcome note and photo
- Posts from your Facebook Page
- Prompts to like you Facebook Page and check-in
- Their friends’ recommendations about your place
This has many benefits for the business, such as:
- Increasing reach – With the prompt is at the top of the newsfeed it will have a positive impact on your reach.
- Encouraging engagement – Once the customer has accessed Place Tips, the content inside encourages engagement with the business’ content.
- Positive customer experience – Customers will see photos and memories of their friends’ past experiences at the establishment. Posts and recommendations from their friends will also be displayed. Place Tips also allows a unique connection between business and customers which can create a sense of community around the business venue.
Here is where the Beacon comes into play. The Facebook Beacon uses Bluetooth technology to deliver Place Tips to your customers. When customers have Bluetooth and Location Services enabled, the Page Tips box will appear at the top of their newsfeed when they access Facebook.

Turning on the feature is very easy. Head into your Business Page settings and then scroll down and look on the left-hand side for “Place Tips.” If you don’t see Place Tips, you will want to make sure your business is listed as a Local Business and that you have your address listed on the Facebook Page.
Once you access the Place Tips section, you can enter your WiFi Network name and then create a custom welcome message! Easy Peasy!
Leveraging Facebook Page Tips
Spread the Word
Once you have Facebook Page Tips set up, it’s important to let your staff know what to expect, and how to leverage the feature. Businesses should also have a plan to let customers know that Page Tips is available and that they will need their Location Services turned on to experience it. To turn on Location Services, they should visit their Phone’s Settings > Privacy > Location Services, then they will need to scroll through to find the Facebook App and authorize the use of Location Services.
Consider providing exclusive content through your Welcome Note. Some businesses offer a special discount and encourage people to use Place Tips while they are visiting your business. Since each customer’s experiences with Place Tips will be different, depending on the interactions of their friends, encouraging people to use Place Tips will help the reach and engagement grow.
Your Business Page
Your Business Page’s posts will display within Page Tips, so ensure you are posting relevant content often. Also, take advantage of Facebook Events if you have any special events coming up. Events will be displayed within the Place Tips and can encourage return visits.Local Businesses: Don't wait for a Beacon, access Facebook Page Tips TODAY! Click To Tweet
If you want to try to get your hands on a Beacon, you can request a Facebook Beacon here. Who knows, maybe they will actually send one out to you! The Facebook Beacon will require that your customers have Bluetooth enabled to work properly. In the meantime, set up your WiFi and reap the benefits of this powerful tool for local brick & mortar businesses!
